2年前の冬、私は美しくて物悲しいセイント・エティエンヌのアルバム『The Night』を聴いていました。アルバムにはイギリスの雨音が収録されていて、実際に家の外でも雨が降っている中、田舎で過ごす日曜の夕方にぴったりでした。
今回、土曜日の朝に聞きたい曲として選んだのは、彼らの最新アルバムから「Brand New Me」という楽観的でユーモラスな曲を選びました。これは、新しい恋に目覚めた女性についての歌です。
「新しい自分」というのは、一日の始まり、特に春には、私たちが感じるべきものなのです。

Two winters ago, I was listening to the beautiful and melancholic album The Night by Saint Etienne. This was perfect for Sunday evenings at the country with the sound of British rain recorded in the album and falling outside the house for real. But I chosed the optimistic and humorous Brand New Me from their last album, a song about a woman waking up to a new love. A « new me » is what we should feel at the start of a new day, especially in Spring !

ときには、悲しい歌こそが心を癒やし、気持ちを落ち着かせてくれるものです。
過去を思い出し、ノスタルジーを感じ、少なくとも歌の中でだけでも恋のメランコリックな側面について思いを巡らせる——そんな時間は素敵なものではないでしょうか。
ジェイ・ジェイ・ヨハンソンが歌詞を歌うときの、完璧なまでに抑制のきいた表現がとても好きです。ミニマルなアレンジも相まって、この曲は日曜の夕暮れのくつろいだ時間に聴くのにぴったりの、美しい一曲になっています。

Sometimes sad song are the songs which would heal you, calm you down. Isn’t it a nice feeling to reminisce about the past, feel the nostalgia, and consider the melancholic side of love, at least in a song. I love the perfect restraint with which Jay-Jay Johanson sings the lyrics, the minimal arrangements, which all make this song beautiful to listen in the cosyness of a Sunday evening.

画家。1959年生まれ。パリ在住。風景、静物、肖像といった古典的主題を、写真を介さない直接観察と一度のセッションによる制作で描き出し、移ろう光やアトリエのモデルが見せる「いま、ここ」の瞬間を捉えている。展覧会『Echoes of Spring, Summer Notes』は、2026年6月4日より東京『イセタン・ザ・スペース』にて開催。
