Saturday Morning
ビーチハウスにいるなら、一日の始まりにニール・ヤングを聴くのに勝るものはありません。車を走らせるときも、田舎で過ごすときも、あるいは絵を描くときも同じです。
ノルマンディーの海辺に暮らしていた10代の頃、ニール・ヤングのアルバム『On the Beach』を聴いていたことを思い出します。『Harvest』を初めて聴いたときのことも、ニューヨークのホテルの部屋で遅くまでドローイングをしていた夜に『Harvest Moon』を初めて聴いたときのことも覚えています。
スタジオで絵を描きながら、私はこれまで何百万回もニール・ヤングを聴いてきましたが、それでもなお新しく響くのです。絵とぶつかってしまう音楽もありますが、ニール・ヤングの音楽は、絵を描くことをそっと支えてくれます。

If in a beach house, there is nothing like to start the day with a Neil Young song, as to drive with Neil Young, or be at the countryside with Neil Young, or paint with Neil Young. I remember listening to On the Beach as a teenager living by the sea in Normandy. I remember the first time I heard Harvest and then the first time I heard Harvest Moon when working late on drawings in a NY hotel room. I’ve been listening to Neil Young million of times while painting in the studio and it still sounds new to me. Some musics goes again the paint, Neil Young music helps the paint.

これは日曜の夜に聴く究極の一曲、失恋した心のためのアンセムです。深い静けさの中で大きな音で聴くと、胸が高鳴ります。
聴いた瞬間、私は夜のビーチハウスへと連れ戻されます。コードとドラムが鳴り始めるあの瞬間は、いつも感情が爆発するような衝撃があります。リチャード・ホーリーのアルバムはすべて持っていますし、彼は私がこれまでさまざまなスタジオで最も多くかけてきた歌手でもあります。遠く離れた場所の孤独を響かせるような声です。
とりわけ鮮明に覚えているのは、ニューヨークで晴れた午後のこと。窓から吹き込む風でスタジオの白いカーテンが揺れ、遠くにはスカイラインが見え、トラックや倉庫が並び、ペンキの匂いが漂っていました。そんな光景の中で、「BBC Radio 6 Music」を通して、イギリス・シェフィールドから中継された リチャード・ホーリーとBBC フィルハーモニックとのライブを聴いていた。

This is the ultimate Sunday night song, an anthem for the heartbroken. Listening to it loud in the deep silence is a thrill. I’m immediately taken back to a beach house at night. The moment the chords and drums kick in is always an emotional blast.
I’ve got all the Richard Hawley albums, and he is certainly the singer I’ve plaid the most in all my different studios, echoeing the loneliness of distant places. Most vivid memory is listening to him on BBC 6 Music playing with the BBC Philarmonic live from Sheffield, England, while it was a sunny afternoon in NY, blue sky, the studio white curtains floating in the breeze coming from the window and the skyline in the distance, trucks, warehouses and the smell of paint.

画家。1959年生まれ。パリ在住。風景、静物、肖像といった古典的主題を、写真を介さない直接観察と一度のセッションによる制作で描き出し、移ろう光やアトリエのモデルが見せる「いま、ここ」の瞬間を捉えている。展覧会『Echoes of Spring, Summer Notes』は、2026年6月4日より東京『イセタン・ザ・スペース』にて開催。
